Overview - National eHealth

Assessing strategies, priorities & implementation

At the December 2009 COAG meeting, the Federal, State and Territory Governments agreed to provide the framework for national healthcare identifiers. This framework – called the Healthcare Identifiers Service (HIS) – will underpin the development of a nationally-consistent electronic health system and is expected to operate from July 2010.

This conference will give a strategic overview of e-health developments in Australia and examine current systems in the context of the four strategic workstreams identified in the National e-Health Strategy: foundations; e-health solutions; governance; change and adoption. It will help healthcare providers to develop their organisational capacity to seamlessly adopt an electronically-based system of care, which can operate within a national framework.

A national e-health system is more than just using technology to deliver health-related services. It’s about changing existing healthcare practices to:

  • Improve patient outcomes;
  • Revolutionize aged care and chronic disease management; and
  • Foster communication and co-operation between different health providers.

In order to achieve these results, health service organisations need to be fully informed of their roles and responsibilities to encourage cross-institutional change and adoption.
